Massage Therapy is a wonderful career and ATIT offers comprehensive training in the field of massage therapy and alternative bodywork. This is one of the only programs in the United States that offers such a comprehensive education that covers the entire body and its systems instead of compartmentalizing the body through different components both educationally and therapeutically. ATIT's Massage Therapy Certification is a comprehensive program that teaches pathology, massage, relaxation, rehabilitation, structural release, myofascial release, neurolymphatic correlations of disease, Japanese medicine, Chinese medicine, Shiatsu, Hara Assessment and acupressure all in one fluid technique. Students going through the Massage Therapy Program will receive dual certification in Integrative Meridian Therapy and Massage Therapy.
The Massage Therapy Program is an extension of Integrative Meridian Therapy Certification. Students receive dual certificates in both Integrative Meridian Therapy and Massage Therapy. This allows students to have long careers as repetitive motion syndromes do not normally occur with Integrative Meridian Therapy. Industry standards for the life of a massage career is 5-7 years because of injury due to the high demands on the body from massage. Integrative Meridian Therapy does not place such high demands on the body and with appropriate self-care practitioners should be able to have a life-long career. Transfer credits may apply towards the Integrative Meridian part of the program but not the Somatic Trauma Release Program. (Advanced Therapy Institute of Touch does not make any guarantees about a practitioners ability to work long-term as everyones circumstances and health issues are different. This is a general statement for someone who is healthy and has no medical issues.)
Integrative Meridian Therapy (IMT) is a form of bodywork that seeks to balance the human body as a whole organism rather than working with independent systems within the body in a compartmentalized way. For decades students have been limited to individual certifications that compartmentalizes the body. IMT changes this dynamic and combines multiple systems to treat the whole person. IMT utilizes specific compression, traction, and touch techniques to facilitate release and integration in the bodies foundational systems. IMT uses postural balancing, myoskeletal stabilization, lymphatics, fascial connective tissue, the endocrine system, the central nervous system, reflex arcs, muscles, ligaments, tendons, meridians, the energetic system and the deeper emotional base of hidden core patterns in a very specific and unique form. IMT incorporates nutrition, exercise, herbalism, homeopathy and rare healing practices as part of the modality to help the entire person. By balancing the human body through specific intentional catalysts which engages the whole organism rather than independent systems within the body, IMT encourages comprehensive relief through relaxation, acute/chronic injury rehabilitation, somatic integration, relief from pain, PTSD recovery, emotional balance and overall body awareness. Integrative Meridian Therapy (IMT) utilizes multiple systems of thought in its form by combining the Japanese meridian system, Chinese acupressure system, Chapman's Neurolymphatic Reflex Points, postural balancing, myoskeletal stabilization and individualized release techniques for the lymph, fascia and connective tissue systems. Because of its traditional emphasis on the meridian systems, IMT also attempts to balance the emotional centers of the body affecting the conscious and subconscious mind.

Massage Module Class Descriptions
Massage Module I - European Massage (48 hours - $360.00 per hour segment)
Specific Course Objective: The objective of this module is to teach students how to facilitate a basic Swedish Massage and give them other European oriented techniques.
Massage was originally based in the orient, however, much of today’s western society knows European oriented techniques. This class will cover basic Swedish, Deep Tissue & Russian styles of massage. Pre-requisites: None
Massage Module II - Eastern Massage (72 hours - $360.00 per 24 hour segment)
Specific Course Objective: The objective of this module is to teach students how to appropriately facilitate eastern bodywork techniques.
This module is exciting and gets back to the history of bodywork and massage. Students will learn how to work with the body through Amma Therapy, Tuina and Ayurvedic forms. This class is where massage can go from relaxing to therapeutic in nature. Pre-requisites: None
Massage Module III - Rehabilitative Massage (48 hours - $360.00 per 24 hour segment)
Specific Course Objective: The objective of this module is to teach students how to work with the body in a rehabilitative manner.
This module will teach students how to do Trigger Point Therapy, Neuromuscular Therapy, Medical Massage, and other forms of bodywork that are rehabilitative in nature. This module also covers sports injuries, sports massage and seated massage. Pre-requisite: None
Massage Module IV - Specialty Massage (48 hours - $360.00 per 24 hour segment)
Specific Course Objective: The objective of this module is to give students a basic understanding of various specialty areas of massage.
This module is very eclectic and fun. It will teach students different forms of specialty massage such as pre-post natal massage, infant massage, polarity, working with hospice clients, spa techniques and many other specialized areas of massage. Pre-requisite: None
Massage Module V - Clinical Practice & Internship (40 hours)
Specific Course Objective: The objective of student clinical practice and internship is to allow students
experience in running and working in professional settings prior to graduation. Please see student clinic section on page 20 for further details. Non-professionally designated/full time students must fulfill 40 hours of student clinic or 20 hours of student clinic and 20 hours of internship. Professionally designated students must fulfill at least 20 hours of internship as a minimum. Professionally designated students may bypass student clinic if they meet the requirements and do an additional 10 hours of internship. Pre-requisites: Meridian Module I, II, III/Somatic Module I & II or Permission of Instructor.
Massage Module VI – Additional Requirements – 511 hours
Specific Course Objective: The objective of this module is to give students more confidence in practicing their skills through tutorials, one on one practice, group participation, and direct experience. Through continuous practice, students gain familiarity and experience in practicing bodywork and other skills necessary to be an independent practitioner. Pre-requisites: Varies - Students will be given a timeline.
Sessions Given – 300 hours
Students are required to give 150 session of IMT & 150 sessions of massage to the general public or other students. Students are not allowed to charge money for these services.
Sessions Rec’d – 30 hours
Students are required to receive 15 sessions of Integrative Meridian Therapy and 15 sessions of Massage Therapy. Ten (10) of the thirty (30) sessions must be received by a professional therapist that the school authorizes. Five of the ten sessions should be in Massage Therapy and the other five should be in Integrative Meridian Therapy. A list will be made available to the students of authorized professionals. Professional fees range from $20.00 - $60.00 per session.
Tutorials - 7 hours.
Tutorials may be on an individual level with an instructor or with a group of not more than 3 students. It is suggested that a 3 hour tutorial be split amongst three students, however, the student will receive all three hours of tutorial credit even though they are sharing those hours. Tutorials are comprised of a question and answer format where students get their individual questions met that perhaps are not appropriate to bring up in a class setting. Students are encouraged to identify where they are having difficulty and work directly on those issues during tutorial times. Tutorials can be the difference between realizing that there is a difficulty and actually overcoming the dynamics that are creating it.
Business Applications Externship – 50 hours (test out/credit for Professionally Designated Students only.)
This is an extension of the Business Skills class. However, students will apply their knowledge to real life situations. In the first phase they will begin learning the ins & outs of business by learning from existing business applications. In the second phase of this externship students will start venturing out on their own. They will request press release kits from various publications, write press releases, write a newsletter, and find niche groups which they would market to through those avenues. Students will also structure a written dialog in order to discuss bodywork with other health care professionals and a dialog to discuss bodywork with potential and existing clients. Developing a network is critical to a business and students will develop networking skills by contacting adjunctive health agencies such as non-profits, private counseling centers or therapists to introduce themselves as students. The final phase will be to introduce, find a location, schedule, and perform a supervised lecture and demonstration of the work to a group of 4 or more people. Students will also venture into the world of sales & marketing by creating their own letterhead, business cards, and brochures. (So as not to replicate or overburden existing agencies in the community, a list of already contacted agencies, groups, and publications will be kept on file. Students must seek additional resources outside this list. Agencies, publications, and groups will not be contacted more than two times in a three year period.)
Student Practice Groups – 92 hours (out of state and distance students may take this as correspondence with Permission of Instructor.) Students must participate in practice groups between classes. Practice Groups are comprised of students practicing class materials on each other as additional experience. These practice groups are two- three hours in length depending on Discussion Group scheduling which will follow for one hour. A format will be given by the supervising instructor on how to set goals, follow through with work and properly design a therapy protocol when working with other students.
Massage Module VII – Evaluation/Examination – 16 hours
Specific Course Objective: The objective of this module is to evaluate students’ performance, review areas of concern in each students practice, review for and pass a final exam prior to full certification. Pre-requisites: Finish all required classes and coursework or Permission of the Instructor.
6 Evaluation Sessions – 6 hrs
Evaluation session are to be given by students to authorized clients/persons for written feedback from the recipient and supervising instructor. These evaluation sessions are incredible learning devices in order to give constructive criticism to students on their strengths and weaknesses. Written feedback forms from the recipient and supervising instructor will be given to the student. A copy must also be kept in the school files. Evaluation sessions must be completed every 3 months throughout the program. Areas which need to be addressed on the evaluation form must be improved on subsequent evaluation sessions or an additional evaluation session will be required. Additional evaluation sessions are at the student’s expense. Fees range from $20.00 - $60.00 per hour.
6 Testing Sessions – 6 hrs
Testing sessions are to be given to students on authorized clients/persons for written grade. These testing sessions will identify students’ weaknesses and strengths. Written & verbal feedback is given to the student so they might improve on the next testing session. Testing sessions will be graded by the instructors overseeing testing sessions. Testing sessions must be completed by the end of the certification program. Also, student weaknesses that are identified on the first testing session must be improved on subsequent testing sessions in order to have a passing grade.
Final Review – 1 hour
Final review is a series of informal meetings where students and an authorized instructor will review for final verbal and written examinations and hands-on practicum.
Final Exam - 3 hours
Module VI is the final module prior to graduation. Students will be tested by both verbal and written examination. A final hands-on practicum will also be given during the final testing weekend. Students’ weaknesses that are identified on the 6 initial testing sessions must be improved on the final practicum in order to pass. A student receiving a non-passing grade will be given instruction on what they need to improve and will be able to take the practicum over a second time.
Core Module I – Expressions of the Human Experience (24 clock hours - $360.00)
Specific Course Objective: This module will give students the skills to be more effective in a therapeutic relationship by maintaining compassionate neutrality. Students will also come away from this class understanding personal and societal paradigms, personality types, communication, ethics and appropriate boundaries during therapeutic interaction.
This course will discuss issues that face the bodywork practice as a whole. Because of the inherent nature of bodywork many of these issues are different than in other industries and are issue specific. Course material will be presented in both an interactive and experiential way so students can fully experience the various subjects somatically. Topics will be ethics, anthropology, communication, psychological and emotional issues. Ethics will include: discussions around scope of practice, personal agendas, behavior toward other practitioners and appropriate boundaries. As a bodywork practitioner, adopting a sense of neutrality can best help your client. The basis of anthropological theory will help students uncover their own paradigms and how people naturally project their paradigms onto others. It will help students shift from using their own paradigms to practicing empathy. Interpersonal communication will also be covered in this Module. Students will learn what body language can tell them about a client and how to best approach a client without crossing boundaries. This course will also offer ideas on how the student as an individual communicates to others through their own body language. The last topic covered will be psychological & emotional issues. Students will evaluate their own personal psychological personality, learn the different classic psychological personalities and role play different scenarios including: how to deal with anger, frustration, love, emotional attachments, transference, and counter-transference. A strong emphasis on self-care is practiced. Pre-requisites: None
Core Module II – Sensitivity to the Human Body (24 clock hours - $360.00)
Specific Course Objective: This module will give students the skills to evaluate posture, read unconscious postural, somatic & energetic cues as well as become more sensitive to energetic stimulus within their own bodies. Students will also learn palpable evaluation techniques to apply toward treatment protocols.
In this module students will explore their sensitivity to touch, energetic messages, and receptivity of and to the body’s own special language. When students understand how they receive messages from other people they can in turn respond to another person’s verbal, energetic, postural, and somatic cues through intuition, visual structural imbalances and direct communication. This module’s goal is to open up the student’s senses as well as their cognitive skills and allow them to integrate these two dynamic sides of the brain. Strong emphasis is placed on self-care and somatic awareness in the students themselves. Pre-requisites: None
Core Module III – Strengthening The Core (24 clock hours - $360.00)
Specific Course Objective: Students will learn how the CNS works in conjunction with isometrics, isotonics,
and integration techniques. Also, students will come away with greater touch sensitivity to tissue unwinding both energetically and physically.
This module will incorporate physical, energetic, and somatic isometrics, isotonics, and integration techniques. It will describe theory, history, and terminology as well as show hands-on technique. Students will learn how and when to properly utilize isometrics, isotonics and integration work within the body. This module will also provide critical integration techniques for working with the body along the meridian pathways, movement techniques, movement integration, how to follow the body both energetically & physically for a fuller release and appropriate tissue unwinding. Much discussion will be given on how isometrics work within the central nervous system and the anatomy of the meridian system as it relates to joint sinews. Specific pathologies covered will be pelvic bowl dysfunction, incontinence, sciatica, hip problems, pain within joints & scoliosis. Strong emphasis is placed on self-care and somatic awareness in the students themselves. Prerequisite(s): None
Core Module IV – Essential Understanding: Trauma (24 clock hours - $360.00)
Specific Course Objective: Students will learn how to recognize and deal effectively with clients who are accidentally triggered through bodywork. Students will also learn to recognize their own triggers.
Any form of bodywork can trigger people’s emotional issues. This module seeks to give hands-on techniques to students which will allow them to deal effectively when this problem arises. This module’s emphasis is how to work with people who are accidentally triggered in a bodywork session. Students will learn proper boundaries in working with emotional issues as well as how to recognize cues when a client is triggered. It will also give students the fundamentals of how to talk with clients about being triggered and how to help clients recover from being triggered in as non-invasive a manner as possible. Techniques covered will be breathing, proximity exercises, energetic/spatial distancing, foot/hand techniques, and a number of other bodywork techniques that work with diminishing the intensity of triggers. The students of this class will learn to recognize their own triggers as well and what to do for themselves. This module is not a replacement for advanced trauma classes, nor will it teach students how to work with and resolve trauma at a deeper level. A strong emphasis on self-care and working through triggers is practiced. Pre-requisites: None.
Core Module V – Western Science (50 clock hours – test out/credit is free or $360.00 per 25 hour segment)
Specific Course Objective: This module will give students a basic understanding of anatomy, physiology, kinesiology, pathology & public health as it relates to Integrative Meridian Therapy and Somatic Trauma Release. Students will also learn direct palpation techniques for the entire body.
This module seeks to present the human body as a dynamic living organism. Within this module students will learn gross anatomy, physiology, kinesiology, pathology and how it relates to public health in an interactive and exciting way. Students will have the chance to learn through many different forms of stimuli. This module combines interactive lecture and tactile lessons on palpation, functions of systems and pathologies, tactile sensing of the energetic differences between systems of the body, self-awareness exercises to teach kinesthetics through self-movement and applied movement, as well as formal lecture with presentations of graphs & anatomical charts. Outside lecture of a public health worker is also a fun addition to this class. A strong emphasis on self-care is also taught. Pre-requisites: None.
Core Module VI – Eastern Science (50 clock hours – test out/credit is free or $360.00 per 25 hour segment)
Specific Course Objective: This module will give students a basic understanding of traditional chinese Medicine theory, meridian Channel anatomy & Pathology as it relates to Integrative Meridian Therapy and Somatic Trauma Release.
This module seeks to present a foundation in traditional Chinese medicine theory including Yin/Yang theory, vital substances, five elements, eight principles, four examinations, organ systems, pathology, meridian & point location, and assessment techniques. Also covered will be organ systems and how they relate to the meridian channels as well as pathology of the Zang Fu organs and patterns of imbalance. Students should be prepared for extensive research outside of this module with case studies. Theory on nutrition, the internal arts, and other traditional Chinese medicinal practices will be covered. A strong emphasis on self-care is also taught. Pre-requisites: None
Core Module VII – Business Applications (24 clock hours - $360.00)
Specific Course Objective: This module will give students a basic understanding of business skills, marketing, sales, public speaking and how to present themselves professionally in any setting they might find themselves in.
In developing yourself as a professional bodyworker, it is imperative to understand business management skills, marketing, licensing and professionalism. This module will focus on the basics of developing your own business. We will combine a bodyworker’s perspective with the reality of business management. Many students fail to realize the necessity of strong business management skills in starting their own businesses. This module will help prepare the way by learning what each student’s strength’s and weaknesses are in business. This module also covers factual data, outlines of businesses, developing a business plan, developing a marketing & sales plan, marketing thru cost-effective procedures vs. costly non-effective procedures, building clientele, press releases, writing publishable articles & press releases, public speaking, business system implementation, cold file analysis, developing cost of services per your overhead, accounts payables management, insurance billings, creating goals, being self-directed, following through, licensing requirements, and other business information that is critical in developing a successful practice. This module also invites successful practitioners from the area to come and speak on how they made their businesses work. A strong emphasis on self-care is also taught. Pre-requisites: None.
Core Module VIII - First Aid & CPR through Red Cross – 21 hours total (10.5 required yearly)
Specific Course Objective: This course will be an independent study which each student will participate in through the American Red Cross or equivalent certification agency.

Integrative Meridian Therapy (IMT) - Class Module Descriptions
Meridian Module I – Japanese Integrative Meridian Therapy (48 clock hours - $360.00 per 24 hour segment)
Specific Course Objective: Students will come away from this module with knowledge regarding the anatomical
locations of the Japanese meridian system and the ability to palpate and perform specific release techniques on 12 of the 14 meridians.
Part 1 - Bladder/Kidney, Heart/Small Intestine; Gall Bladder/Liver (24 hrs)
Part 2 - Triple Heater/Pericardium; Stomach/Spleen; Lg Intes./Lung.(24 hrs)
Students will also begin to understand how to apply basic principles of Integrative Meridian Therapy.
This module offers the beginning techniques for Integrative Meridian Therapy. This class teaches Shiatsu which is the healing art of Judo martial arts. Students learn 6 of the 12 meridians through hands-on study of theory, assessment, traditional shiatsu techniques, Judo Internal Arts, non-traditional/non-invasive western forms of body positioning, and how to work with the actual organs through visceral manipulation. Basics of anatomy & physiology in connection with Traditional Chinese Medicine are included as well as the nuances of energetic sensitivity in feeling the body’s own natural rhythms and waves. This course will cover all 12 major meridians with Masanaga's extensions that make this form dynamic. Intertwined with hands-on technique will be interactive exercises that promote self-care and Judo Internal Arts that deepen intuitive understanding of your clients body as well as your own. This module will also cover history, terminology and the anatomy of the Japanese meridian system. A strong emphasis on self-care is also taught. Pre-requisites: None

Specific Course Objective: Students will come away from this module with knowledge regarding anatomical locations of the muscles, joints, ligature, tendons and bones with the ability to palpate and perform specific release techniques on the core as well as the extremities. Students will also understand the beginning theories which form the basis of structural function within the body.

This course teaches gentle body mobilization for the core, pelvis, neck, cranium and extremities where meridian channels have a tendency to bind and create discomfort. Students will learn from an energetic, physio-mechanical and meridian point perspective. Sometimes this form is the missing link in working with clients that just don’t seem to get better. This course teaches gentle body mobilization that provides deep releases on many of the bodies systems the CNS A strong emphasis on self-care is practiced while learning specific relaxation regimens. Anatomy and energetic sensitivity to the joints, bones, meridian channels, and sinew structures will be taught in an interactive way during the hands-on technique aspect of the class. Advanced techniques will also be shown in order to facilitate deeper releases in clients. Meridian Module III – Hara Abdominal Assessment (24 clock hours - $360.00)
Specific Course Objective: Students will come away from this module with knowledge regarding anatomical locations of the abdominal assessment points, other assessment tools, palpation techniques and how to appropriately read what the points are disclosing about the meridian structure.
This course is the turning point in going from intuition to assessment in working with the body. Students will learn abdominal assessment tools in order to work with specific meridians that are giving messages as far as the body’s needs. History of energetics, tongue diagnosis, pulse diagnosis, iridology will be included in this exciting class as we discover what eastern philosophers have been practicing for thousands of years. A deeper understanding of the energetic field of the meridian system and how we translate those messages back and forth from practitioner to client as expressed thought is taught. A strong emphasis on self-care is also taught. Pre-requisites: Meridian Module I & II or Permission of Instructor.
Meridian Module IV– Meridian Point Work (168 clock hours - $360.00 per 24 hour segment)
Specific Course Objective: Students will come away from this module with knowledge regarding the anatomical locations of the Chinese meridian system and the ability to palpate and perform specific techniques on all 14 meridians over 7 classes.

This is an exciting module where we combine beginning techniques with more advanced and specific point work within the Chinese Acupressure system. Students also learn color light therapy techniques to use. MIT has begun researching light therapies and shown them to be efficacious. Students go from a beginner’s touch to a much greater level of sensitivity by being able to track more than one system at a time. This course provides the attention to detail in order to allow the student to feel the body’s tissues unwind, the energetic rhythms of the meridian system/acupressure points as it flows through the body, and the subtle joint movements as sinews are freed. This attention to sensitivity creates a holistic understanding of the specific points, the meridian field, and finding a deeper understanding to the body’s subtle messages. A strong emphasis on self-care is included in this module along with more meridian channel anatomy. Different theories and philosophies will be explored such as Yin/yang, 8 principles, 5 element theory and what the energy channels govern are all covered in this dynamic course offering. Students will also learn how to work with meridian imbalances and their specific role per the individual. Abdominal assessment will be utilized in working with the meridians. However, intuitive assessment by energetic feel will also come into play. Individual courses in this module will cover two meridians at a time. Again, strong emphasis in self-care is taught. Pre-requisites: 24 hours each of MMI, II, III or Permission of the Instructor.

Elective Module I – Advanced Pelvic Class – (16 clock hours - $240.00)
Specific Course Objective: This course will allow students to confidently evaluate and perform advanced release techniques in working with euro-pelvic issues.
In this module students will learn advanced release techniques in working with euro-pelvic issues. This course will include both point work and structural release techniques. A more in-depth analysis of the pelvic bowl and its functions will be discussed along with advanced anatomy of the pelvis. Techniques on how to strengthen the pelvic bowl and intrinsic muscles will be given in a fun and interactive way. Pre-requisites: Meridian Module I, II, III & IV or Permission of Instructor.
Elective Module II - Advanced Point Work The missing 110 (24 clock hours - $360.00)
Specific Course Objective: Students will understand and be able to perform release techniques for an
additional 110 meridian points.
This module is based on the missing 110 acupuncture points. Students will learn additional points in order to have a broader spectrum to work from. Pre-requisites: Core & Meridian Modules or Permission of Instructor.
Elective Module III -Advanced Cranial Class (16 hours - $240.00)
Specific Course Objective: This course will allow students to evaluate and perform advanced release techniques from an energetic, physio-mechanical and meridian perspective.
Students will learn cranial from an energetic, physio-mechanical, and meridian point perspective. This class can be transformational for all those who take it. Cranial work can be the missing link in working with clients that just don’t seem to get better. Pre-requisites: Meridian Module I & II, or IV & Core Class Module II or Permission of Instructor.
Elective Class Module IV - Bone Marrow Tendon Washing/Taoist Self-Care (8 hours - $120.00)
Specific Course Objective: This course will allow students to recognize how to balance the meridians, build ki, and store ki in the Governing and Conception Vessel.
This module is based on Da Mo’s original transcripts of working with the reproductive glands in order to balance the meridians, build ki, and store ki in the Conception & Governing Vessel. This course explains the relationship of our reproductive glands in conjunction with health of the lymph system, pelvic balance, and meridian health. This course is tastefully done, however, explicit content is discussed. Pre-requisites: Permission of the Instructor.
Elective Module V - Self-Care (8 hours - $120.00)
Specific Course Objective: This course will teach students a multitude of self-care techniques for themselves as well as their clients.
This module is for those students wanting self-care techniques that are more structurally and energetically based. It is critical that practitioners learn self-care in order to treat themselves as well as pass on self-care knowledge to their clients. The most important component in any form of healing is teaching people how to heal themselves. Pre-requisites: None
Elective Module VI – Assessment Points – Chapman’s Reflexes (24 hours - $360.00)
Specific Course Objective: This course will teach students the correlation between the eastern assessment points and Chapman’s Neurolymphatic Reflexes.
This elective class is for those students wanting to understand the Assessment Points and how they correlate to Chapman’s Neurolymphatic Reflexes. This is a dynamic course offering that unravels the mysteries of how to work with the lymphatic system through the meridian system and Chapman’s points. Specific topics of discussion will be pelvic-thyroid syndrome, lymph drainage, and how to properly assess these issues through point palpation. Pre-requisites: Meridian Module I, II, & III or Permission of Instructor.
The Massage Therapy Program is an extension of Integrative Meridian Therapy Certification. Students receive dual certificates in both Integrative Meridian Therapy and Massage Therapy. This allows students to have long careers as repetitive motion syndromes do not normally occur with Integrative Meridian Therapy. Industry standards for the life of a massage career is 5-7 years because of injury due to the high demands on the body from massage. Integrative Meridian Therapy does not place such high demands on the body and with appropriate self-care practitioners should be able to have a life-long career. Transfer credits may apply towards the Integrative Meridian part of the program but not the Somatic Trauma Release Program. (Advanced Therapy Institute of Touch does not make any guarantees about a practitioners ability to work long-term as everyones circumstances and health issues are different. This is a general statement for someone who is healthy and has no medical issues.)
Integrative Meridian Therapy (IMT) is a form of bodywork that seeks to balance the human body as a whole organism rather than working with independent systems within the body in a compartmentalized way. For decades students have been limited to individual certifications that compartmentalizes the body. IMT changes this dynamic and combines multiple systems to treat the whole person. IMT utilizes specific compression, traction, and touch techniques to facilitate release and integration in the bodies foundational systems. Occupational Objective:

Massage Module Class Descriptions
Massage Module I - European Massage (48 hours - $360.00 per hour segment)
Specific Course Objective: The objective of this module is to teach students how to facilitate a basic Swedish Massage and give them other European oriented techniques.
Massage was originally based in the orient, however, much of today’s western society knows European oriented techniques. This class will cover basic Swedish, Deep Tissue & Russian styles of massage. Pre-requisites: None
Massage Module II - Eastern Massage (72 hours - $360.00 per 24 hour segment)
Specific Course Objective: The objective of this module is to teach students how to appropriately facilitate eastern bodywork techniques.
This module is exciting and gets back to the history of bodywork and massage. Students will learn how to work with the body through Amma Therapy, Tuina and Ayurvedic forms. This class is where massage can go from relaxing to therapeutic in nature. Pre-requisites: None
Massage Module III - Rehabilitative Massage (48 hours - $360.00 per 24 hour segment)
Specific Course Objective: The objective of this module is to teach students how to work with the body in a rehabilitative manner.
This module will teach students how to do Trigger Point Therapy, Neuromuscular Therapy, Medical Massage, and other forms of bodywork that are rehabilitative in nature. This module also covers sports injuries, sports massage and seated massage. Pre-requisite: None
Massage Module IV - Specialty Massage (48 hours - $360.00 per 24 hour segment)
Specific Course Objective: The objective of this module is to give students a basic understanding of various specialty areas of massage.
This module is very eclectic and fun. It will teach students different forms of specialty massage such as pre-post natal massage, infant massage, polarity, working with hospice clients, spa techniques and many other specialized areas of massage. Pre-requisite: None
Massage Module V - Clinical Practice & Internship (40 hours)
Specific Course Objective: The objective of student clinical practice and internship is to allow students
experience in running and working in professional settings prior to graduation. Please see student clinic section on page 20 for further details. Non-professionally designated/full time students must fulfill 40 hours of student clinic or 20 hours of student clinic and 20 hours of internship. Professionally designated students must fulfill at least 20 hours of internship as a minimum. Professionally designated students may bypass student clinic if they meet the requirements and do an additional 10 hours of internship. Pre-requisites: Meridian Module I, II, III/Somatic Module I & II or Permission of Instructor.
Massage Module VI – Additional Requirements – 511 hours
Specific Course Objective: The objective of this module is to give students more confidence in practicing their skills through tutorials, one on one practice, group participation, and direct experience. Through continuous practice, students gain familiarity and experience in practicing bodywork and other skills necessary to be an independent practitioner. Pre-requisites: Varies - Students will be given a timeline.
Sessions Given – 300 hours
Students are required to give 150 session of IMT & 150 sessions of massage to the general public or other students. Students are not allowed to charge money for these services.
Sessions Rec’d – 30 hours
Students are required to receive 15 sessions of Integrative Meridian Therapy and 15 sessions of Massage Therapy. Ten (10) of the thirty (30) sessions must be received by a professional therapist that the school authorizes. Five of the ten sessions should be in Massage Therapy and the other five should be in Integrative Meridian Therapy. A list will be made available to the students of authorized professionals. Professional fees range from $20.00 - $60.00 per session.
Tutorials - 7 hours.
Tutorials may be on an individual level with an instructor or with a group of not more than 3 students. It is suggested that a 3 hour tutorial be split amongst three students, however, the student will receive all three hours of tutorial credit even though they are sharing those hours. Tutorials are comprised of a question and answer format where students get their individual questions met that perhaps are not appropriate to bring up in a class setting. Students are encouraged to identify where they are having difficulty and work directly on those issues during tutorial times. Tutorials can be the difference between realizing that there is a difficulty and actually overcoming the dynamics that are creating it.
Business Applications Externship – 50 hours (test out/credit for Professionally Designated Students only.)
This is an extension of the Business Skills class. However, students will apply their knowledge to real life situations. In the first phase they will begin learning the ins & outs of business by learning from existing business applications. In the second phase of this externship students will start venturing out on their own. They will request press release kits from various publications, write press releases, write a newsletter, and find niche groups which they would market to through those avenues. Students will also structure a written dialog in order to discuss bodywork with other health care professionals and a dialog to discuss bodywork with potential and existing clients. Developing a network is critical to a business and students will develop networking skills by contacting adjunctive health agencies such as non-profits, private counseling centers or therapists to introduce themselves as students. The final phase will be to introduce, find a location, schedule, and perform a supervised lecture and demonstration of the work to a group of 4 or more people. Students will also venture into the world of sales & marketing by creating their own letterhead, business cards, and brochures. (So as not to replicate or overburden existing agencies in the community, a list of already contacted agencies, groups, and publications will be kept on file. Students must seek additional resources outside this list. Agencies, publications, and groups will not be contacted more than two times in a three year period.)
Student Practice Groups – 92 hours (out of state and distance students may take this as correspondence with Permission of Instructor.) Students must participate in practice groups between classes. Practice Groups are comprised of students practicing class materials on each other as additional experience. These practice groups are two- three hours in length depending on Discussion Group scheduling which will follow for one hour. A format will be given by the supervising instructor on how to set goals, follow through with work and properly design a therapy protocol when working with other students.
Massage Module VII – Evaluation/Examination – 16 hours
Specific Course Objective: The objective of this module is to evaluate students’ performance, review areas of concern in each students practice, review for and pass a final exam prior to full certification. Pre-requisites: Finish all required classes and coursework or Permission of the Instructor.
6 Evaluation Sessions – 6 hrs
Evaluation session are to be given by students to authorized clients/persons for written feedback from the recipient and supervising instructor. These evaluation sessions are incredible learning devices in order to give constructive criticism to students on their strengths and weaknesses. Written feedback forms from the recipient and supervising instructor will be given to the student. A copy must also be kept in the school files. Evaluation sessions must be completed every 3 months throughout the program. Areas which need to be addressed on the evaluation form must be improved on subsequent evaluation sessions or an additional evaluation session will be required. Additional evaluation sessions are at the student’s expense. Fees range from $20.00 - $60.00 per hour.
6 Testing Sessions – 6 hrs
Testing sessions are to be given to students on authorized clients/persons for written grade. These testing sessions will identify students’ weaknesses and strengths. Written & verbal feedback is given to the student so they might improve on the next testing session. Testing sessions will be graded by the instructors overseeing testing sessions. Testing sessions must be completed by the end of the certification program. Also, student weaknesses that are identified on the first testing session must be improved on subsequent testing sessions in order to have a passing grade.
Final Review – 1 hour
Final review is a series of informal meetings where students and an authorized instructor will review for final verbal and written examinations and hands-on practicum.
Final Exam - 3 hours
Module VI is the final module prior to graduation. Students will be tested by both verbal and written examination. A final hands-on practicum will also be given during the final testing weekend. Students’ weaknesses that are identified on the 6 initial testing sessions must be improved on the final practicum in order to pass. A student receiving a non-passing grade will be given instruction on what they need to improve and will be able to take the practicum over a second time.
Core Module I – Expressions of the Human Experience (24 clock hours - $360.00)
Specific Course Objective: This module will give students the skills to be more effective in a therapeutic relationship by maintaining compassionate neutrality. Students will also come away from this class understanding personal and societal paradigms, personality types, communication, ethics and appropriate boundaries during therapeutic interaction.
This course will discuss issues that face the bodywork practice as a whole. Because of the inherent nature of bodywork many of these issues are different than in other industries and are issue specific. Course material will be presented in both an interactive and experiential way so students can fully experience the various subjects somatically. Topics will be ethics, anthropology, communication, psychological and emotional issues. Ethics will include: discussions around scope of practice, personal agendas, behavior toward other practitioners and appropriate boundaries. As a bodywork practitioner, adopting a sense of neutrality can best help your client. The basis of anthropological theory will help students uncover their own paradigms and how people naturally project their paradigms onto others. It will help students shift from using their own paradigms to practicing empathy. Interpersonal communication will also be covered in this Module. Students will learn what body language can tell them about a client and how to best approach a client without crossing boundaries. This course will also offer ideas on how the student as an individual communicates to others through their own body language. The last topic covered will be psychological & emotional issues. Students will evaluate their own personal psychological personality, learn the different classic psychological personalities and role play different scenarios including: how to deal with anger, frustration, love, emotional attachments, transference, and counter-transference. A strong emphasis on self-care is practiced. Pre-requisites: None
Core Module II – Sensitivity to the Human Body (24 clock hours - $360.00)
Specific Course Objective: This module will give students the skills to evaluate posture, read unconscious postural, somatic & energetic cues as well as become more sensitive to energetic stimulus within their own bodies. Students will also learn palpable evaluation techniques to apply toward treatment protocols.
In this module students will explore their sensitivity to touch, energetic messages, and receptivity of and to the body’s own special language. When students understand how they receive messages from other people they can in turn respond to another person’s verbal, energetic, postural, and somatic cues through intuition, visual structural imbalances and direct communication. This module’s goal is to open up the student’s senses as well as their cognitive skills and allow them to integrate these two dynamic sides of the brain. Strong emphasis is placed on self-care and somatic awareness in the students themselves. Pre-requisites: None
Core Module III – Strengthening The Core (24 clock hours - $360.00)
Specific Course Objective: Students will learn how the CNS works in conjunction with isometrics, isotonics,
and integration techniques. Also, students will come away with greater touch sensitivity to tissue unwinding both energetically and physically.
This module will incorporate physical, energetic, and somatic isometrics, isotonics, and integration techniques. It will describe theory, history, and terminology as well as show hands-on technique. Students will learn how and when to properly utilize isometrics, isotonics and integration work within the body. This module will also provide critical integration techniques for working with the body along the meridian pathways, movement techniques, movement integration, how to follow the body both energetically & physically for a fuller release and appropriate tissue unwinding. Much discussion will be given on how isometrics work within the central nervous system and the anatomy of the meridian system as it relates to joint sinews. Specific pathologies covered will be pelvic bowl dysfunction, incontinence, sciatica, hip problems, pain within joints & scoliosis. Strong emphasis is placed on self-care and somatic awareness in the students themselves. Prerequisite(s): None
Core Module IV – Essential Understanding: Trauma (24 clock hours - $360.00)
Specific Course Objective: Students will learn how to recognize and deal effectively with clients who are accidentally triggered through bodywork. Students will also learn to recognize their own triggers.
Any form of bodywork can trigger people’s emotional issues. This module seeks to give hands-on techniques to students which will allow them to deal effectively when this problem arises. This module’s emphasis is how to work with people who are accidentally triggered in a bodywork session. Students will learn proper boundaries in working with emotional issues as well as how to recognize cues when a client is triggered. It will also give students the fundamentals of how to talk with clients about being triggered and how to help clients recover from being triggered in as non-invasive a manner as possible. Techniques covered will be breathing, proximity exercises, energetic/spatial distancing, foot/hand techniques, and a number of other bodywork techniques that work with diminishing the intensity of triggers. The students of this class will learn to recognize their own triggers as well and what to do for themselves. This module is not a replacement for advanced trauma classes, nor will it teach students how to work with and resolve trauma at a deeper level. A strong emphasis on self-care and working through triggers is practiced. Pre-requisites: None.
Core Module V – Western Science (50 clock hours – test out/credit is free or $360.00 per 25 hour segment)
Specific Course Objective: This module will give students a basic understanding of anatomy, physiology, kinesiology, pathology & public health as it relates to Integrative Meridian Therapy and Somatic Trauma Release. Students will also learn direct palpation techniques for the entire body.
This module seeks to present the human body as a dynamic living organism. Within this module students will learn gross anatomy, physiology, kinesiology, pathology and how it relates to public health in an interactive and exciting way. Students will have the chance to learn through many different forms of stimuli. This module combines interactive lecture and tactile lessons on palpation, functions of systems and pathologies, tactile sensing of the energetic differences between systems of the body, self-awareness exercises to teach kinesthetics through self-movement and applied movement, as well as formal lecture with presentations of graphs & anatomical charts. Outside lecture of a public health worker is also a fun addition to this class. A strong emphasis on self-care is also taught. Pre-requisites: None.
Core Module VI – Eastern Science (50 clock hours – test out/credit is free or $360.00 per 25 hour segment)
Specific Course Objective: This module will give students a basic understanding of traditional chinese Medicine theory, meridian Channel anatomy & Pathology as it relates to Integrative Meridian Therapy and Somatic Trauma Release.
This module seeks to present a foundation in traditional Chinese medicine theory including Yin/Yang theory, vital substances, five elements, eight principles, four examinations, organ systems, pathology, meridian & point location, and assessment techniques. Also covered will be organ systems and how they relate to the meridian channels as well as pathology of the Zang Fu organs and patterns of imbalance. Students should be prepared for extensive research outside of this module with case studies. Theory on nutrition, the internal arts, and other traditional Chinese medicinal practices will be covered. A strong emphasis on self-care is also taught. Pre-requisites: None
Core Module VII – Business Applications (24 clock hours - $360.00)
Specific Course Objective: This module will give students a basic understanding of business skills, marketing, sales, public speaking and how to present themselves professionally in any setting they might find themselves in.
In developing yourself as a professional bodyworker, it is imperative to understand business management skills, marketing, licensing and professionalism. This module will focus on the basics of developing your own business. We will combine a bodyworker’s perspective with the reality of business management. Many students fail to realize the necessity of strong business management skills in starting their own businesses. This module will help prepare the way by learning what each student’s strength’s and weaknesses are in business. This module also covers factual data, outlines of businesses, developing a business plan, developing a marketing & sales plan, marketing thru cost-effective procedures vs. costly non-effective procedures, building clientele, press releases, writing publishable articles & press releases, public speaking, business system implementation, cold file analysis, developing cost of services per your overhead, accounts payables management, insurance billings, creating goals, being self-directed, following through, licensing requirements, and other business information that is critical in developing a successful practice. Integrative Meridian Therapy (IMT) - Class Module Descriptions
Meridian Module I – Japanese Integrative Meridian Therapy (48 clock hours - $360.00 per 24 hour segment)
Specific Course Objective: Students will come away from this module with knowledge regarding the anatomical
locations of the Japanese meridian system and the ability to palpate and perform specific release techniques on 12 of the 14 meridians.

Students will also begin to understand how to apply basic principles of Integrative Meridian Therapy.
This module offers the beginning techniques for Integrative Meridian Therapy. This class teaches Shiatsu which is the healing art of Judo martial arts. Students learn 6 of the 12 meridians through hands-on study of theory, assessment, traditional shiatsu techniques, Judo Internal Arts, non-traditional/non-invasive western forms of body positioning, and how to work with the actual organs through visceral manipulation. Basics of anatomy & physiology in connection with Traditional Chinese Medicine are included as well as the nuances of energetic sensitivity in feeling the body’s own natural rhythms and waves. This course will cover all 12 major meridians with Masanaga's extensions that make this form dynamic. Intertwined with hands-on technique will be interactive exercises that promote self-care and Judo Internal Arts that deepen intuitive understanding of your clients body as well as your own. This module will also cover history, terminology and the anatomy of the Japanese meridian system. A strong emphasis on self-care is also taught. Pre-requisites: None
Meridian Module II – Structural Meridian Rehabilitation (72 clock hours - $360.00 per 24 hour segment)
Specific Course Objective: Students will come away from this module with knowledge regarding anatomical locations of the muscles, joints, ligature, tendons and bones with the ability to palpate and perform specific release techniques on the core as well as the extremities. Students will also understand the beginning theories which form the basis of structural function within the body.

This course teaches gentle body mobilization for the core, pelvis, neck, cranium and extremities where meridian channels have a tendency to bind and create discomfort. Students will learn from an energetic, physio-mechanical and meridian point perspective. Sometimes this form is the missing link in working with clients that just don’t seem to get better. This course teaches gentle body mobilization that provides deep releases on many of the bodies systems the CNS A strong emphasis on self-care is practiced while learning specific relaxation regimens. Anatomy and energetic sensitivity to the joints, bones, meridian channels, and sinew structures will be taught in an interactive way during the hands-on technique aspect of the class. Advanced techniques will also be shown in order to facilitate deeper releases in clients. Meridian Module III – Hara Abdominal Assessment (24 clock hours - $360.00)
Specific Course Objective: Students will come away from this module with knowledge regarding anatomical locations of the abdominal assessment points, other assessment tools, palpation techniques and how to appropriately read what the points are disclosing about the meridian structure.
This course is the turning point in going from intuition to assessment in working with the body. Students will learn abdominal assessment tools in order to work with specific meridians that are giving messages as far as the body’s needs. History of energetics, tongue diagnosis, pulse diagnosis, iridology will be included in this exciting class as we discover what eastern philosophers have been practicing for thousands of years. A deeper understanding of the energetic field of the meridian system and how we translate those messages back and forth from practitioner to client as expressed thought is taught. A strong emphasis on self-care is also taught. Pre-requisites: Meridian Module I & II or Permission of Instructor.
Meridian Module IV– Meridian Point Work (168 clock hours - $360.00 per 24 hour segment)

This is an exciting module where we combine beginning techniques with more advanced and specific point work within the Chinese Acupressure system. Students also learn color light therapy techniques to use. MIT has begun researching light therapies and shown them to be efficacious. Students go from a beginner’s touch to a much greater level of sensitivity by being able to track more than one system at a time. This course provides the attention to detail in order to allow the student to feel the body’s tissues unwind, the energetic rhythms of the meridian system/acupressure points as it flows through the body, and the subtle joint movements as sinews are freed. This attention to sensitivity creates a holistic understanding of the specific points, the meridian field, and finding a deeper understanding to the body’s subtle messages. A strong emphasis on self-care is included in this module along with more meridian channel anatomy. Different theories and philosophies will be explored such as Yin/yang, 8 principles, 5 element theory and what the energy channels govern are all covered in this dynamic course offering. Students will also learn how to work with meridian imbalances and their specific role per the individual. Abdominal assessment will be utilized in working with the meridians. However, intuitive assessment by energetic feel will also come into play. Individual courses in this module will cover two meridians at a time. Again, strong emphasis in self-care is taught. Pre-requisites: 24 hours each of MMI, II, III or Permission of the Instructor.

Elective Module I – Advanced Pelvic Class – (16 clock hours - $240.00)
Specific Course Objective: This course will allow students to confidently evaluate and perform advanced release techniques in working with euro-pelvic issues.
In this module students will learn advanced release techniques in working with euro-pelvic issues. This course will include both point work and structural release techniques. A more in-depth analysis of the pelvic bowl and its functions will be discussed along with advanced anatomy of the pelvis. Techniques on how to strengthen the pelvic bowl and intrinsic muscles will be given in a fun and interactive way. Pre-requisites: Meridian Module I, II, III & IV or Permission of Instructor.
Elective Module II - Advanced Point Work The missing 110 (24 clock hours - $360.00)
Specific Course Objective: Students will understand and be able to perform release techniques for an
additional 110 meridian points.
This module is based on the missing 110 acupuncture points. Students will learn additional points in order to have a broader spectrum to work from. Pre-requisites: Core & Meridian Modules or Permission of Instructor.
Elective Module III -Advanced Cranial Class (16 hours - $240.00)
Specific Course Objective: This course will allow students to evaluate and perform advanced release techniques from an energetic, physio-mechanical and meridian perspective.
Students will learn cranial from an energetic, physio-mechanical, and meridian point perspective. This class can be transformational for all those who take it. Cranial work can be the missing link in working with clients that just don’t seem to get better. Pre-requisites: Meridian Module I & II, or IV & Core Class Module II or Permission of Instructor.
Elective Class Module IV - Bone Marrow Tendon Washing/Taoist Self-Care (8 hours - $120.00)
Specific Course Objective: This course will allow students to recognize how to balance the meridians, build ki, and store ki in the Governing and Conception Vessel.
This module is based on Da Mo’s original transcripts of working with the reproductive glands in order to balance the meridians, build ki, and store ki in the Conception & Governing Vessel. This course explains the relationship of our reproductive glands in conjunction with health of the lymph system, pelvic balance, and meridian health. This course is tastefully done, however, explicit content is discussed. Pre-requisites: Permission of the Instructor.
Elective Module V - Self-Care (8 hours - $120.00)
Specific Course Objective: This course will teach students a multitude of self-care techniques for themselves as well as their clients.
This module is for those students wanting self-care techniques that are more structurally and energetically based. It is critical that practitioners learn self-care in order to treat themselves as well as pass on self-care knowledge to their clients. The most important component in any form of healing is teaching people how to heal themselves. Pre-requisites: None
Elective Module VI – Assessment Points – Chapman’s Reflexes (24 hours - $360.00)
Specific Course Objective: This course will teach students the correlation between the eastern assessment points and Chapman’s Neurolymphatic Reflexes.
This elective class is for those students wanting to understand the Assessment Points and how they correlate to Chapman’s Neurolymphatic Reflexes. This is a dynamic course offering that unravels the mysteries of how to work with the lymphatic system through the meridian system and Chapman’s points. Specific topics of discussion will be pelvic-thyroid syndrome, lymph drainage, and how to properly assess these issues through point palpation.
